4-H dogs and young handlers take home awards
Dogs with names like Bubba, Cuddles, Eddie and Murphy showed off their skills in August during the Douglas County 4-H Dog Show.
Alongside their young handlers, the dogs first performed in an event patterned after equestrian show jumping, combining the elements of a dog's agility, briskness, confidence, and a handler's control over an obstacle course designed for dogs.
Next, the show moved onto obedience classes. The purpose of obedience is to demonstrate the usefulness of dogs as companions, not merely the dog's ability to follow specified routines in the obedience ring.
In the sport of Rally O, the dogs and handlers completed a course designed by the rally judge that tests agility and obedience.
Finally, the showmanship competition gave 4-H members the chance to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in dog show handling.
