Leipholtz joins Echo Press staff

Beth Leipholtz

Beth Leipholtz of Alexandria has joined the staff of the Echo Press as a full-time reporter.

Leipholtz still vividly remembers the moment she fell in love with writing.

"It was in my ninth grade journalism class, after I finished my first story," Leipholtz said. "I looked at it and was just kind of like, 'Wow, I wrote this, and it's going to matter to someone.' Ever since then I've been hooked on telling people's stories."

Leipholtz grew up in Buffalo and attended Buffalo High School. Writing became her passion after taking that first journalism class. From that point on, she immersed herself in the world of journalism and design by becoming involved with the school's yearbook and newspaper.

After graduating in 2011, Leipholtz chose to attend the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph. She majored in communication with a minor in Hispanic studies. Highlights from her college career include playing for the women's rugby team and studying abroad in Chile. However, her fondest memories come from spending four years working on the college's newspaper and eventually serving as editor-in-chief.

"Nothing compares to nights spent in The Record office," Leipholtz said. "When your college paper comes out weekly and the staff is only about 10 people, you really learn to pull together and pull some all-nighters for the sake of the paper. It's a legacy and an award-winning paper, and being part of that was (and still is) an honor."

Leipholtz moved to Alexandria in July and lives with her boyfriend and their three dogs. She worked as a graphic designer in Clarissa and in child watch at the YMCA before being employed at the Echo Press. In her spare time she continues to run her own sobriety-focused blog and does freelance design and writing.
