Sports briefs: Alexandria natives honored
Vogeler named first team defense
Alexandria native John Vogeler had an award winning season playing defensive back for the Bemidji State University football team. He was named to the 2017 D2CCA Football All-Super Region Four First Team Defense.
Vogeler had five interceptions, returning three for touchdowns. He finished his junior year with 28 solo tackles and 18 assisted tackles with two tackles for a loss and six pass breakups.
Burnham receives post-season honor
Jefferson High School graduate Gideon Burnham was named first team All-UMAC his senior year at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul recently.
Burnham led the Eagles defense from the outside linebacker position with a team-leading 87 tackles on the year. Included in that was 10.5 tackles for loss. He also had a team-leading seven sacks to go with one interception and two pass breakups.
Doherty and Borris CLC Performers of the Week
Alexandria's Anna Doherty and Ryan Borris were named among the Central Lakes Conference Performers of the Week for their efforts on the ice and wrestling mat recently.
Doherty, a freshman, scored eight points off of six goals and two assists in the first six games of the girls hockey team's season.
Borris, a sophomore, won seven matches in the Alexandria wrestling team's first two tournaments. At the Litchfield Invitational, Borris went 4-0 and came out as the 106 weight class champion.
