Girls basketball: Cards cruise again behind their defense
The Alexandria girls basketball team continues to pile up wins as the Cardinals moved to 8-3 with a 55-35 win over Sauk Rapids-Rice on Thursday.
Alexandria is 5-1 in the Central Lakes Conference, trailing only undefeated Willmar (12-0, 5-0 CLC) in league play. The Cardinals have done it with a good defensive team as they held their fourth opponent to less than 40 points in the win over the Storm (6-6, 2-4 CLC).
"Defense and rebounding were key as we frustrated the Storm, holding their sharp shooter, Bailey Becker, to just 13, and we hammered the boards for 37 rebounds," Alexandria head coach Wendy Kohler said.
Alexandria spread out its scoring with Emily Jones and Courtney Gould each scoring 13 to lead the way. Emma Schmidt and Mia McGrane added eight apiece. Jones added seven rebounds and five steals, and Schmidt grabbed six boards, four assists and four steals.
The Cardinals next game is a home matchup against 7-5 Brainerd on Jan. 16 at 7:15 p.m. The Warriors are 3-2 in the CLC.
