Boys basketball: Chargers get LEC win over Underwood

James Strese1 / 2
Marshall Riedel2 / 2

The Brandon-Evansville boys basketball team got its first win in the Little Eight Conference on Thursday by taking down Underwood 62-51.

The Chargers (6-4, 1-2 LEC) built up a 27-17 lead by the break. They shot just 34 percent (16-47), but used their defense to get the win.

"We played a good Underwood team that scored 70 points earlier this week," B-E head coach Trent Hintermeister said. "We did a nice job of containing their offense in the first half. In the second half, (senior guard) Brody Rocholl got hot and made some incredible shots with a hand in his face. We were short handed tonight with a few guys out with sickness and other guys stepped up and played well."

Senior forward James Strese continued his nice season by putting in 15 points and grabbing eight rebound for the Chargers. Sophomore guard Marshall Riedel had 13 points and senior guards Taylor Bitzan and Jake Hintermeister each added 11.

"Again, we played tough defense and that led to our offense being more efficient tonight even though our shooting percentage doesn't show it," coach Hintermeister said. "We sealed the game down the stretch tonight by making 24-of-26 free throws in the game. I'm happy to see us learning from previous mistakes. Our next step is to hopefully get healthy at some point this season."
