Wrestling: Lakers move to Section 5 semifinals
The Minnewaska wrestling team lived to see another day in the Section 5, Class A tournament by knocking off fifth-seeded Paynesville Area on Tuesday.
The Lakers, seeded fourth, won five of the last six matches to erase a deficit and secure a 42-31 win. All five of those wins down the stretch came by fall as Ryan VanLuik, Grant Hendren, Tyson Meyer, Tyler VanLuik and Jakob Swalla pinned their man.
Easton McCrory and Jacob Blair each got decision wins at 106 and 113 pounds, respectively, to get the Lakers going. Paynesville rallied with three straight wins, but Mason Blair stopped the bleeding by getting a pin in 3:48 at 138 pounds.
Minnewaska now gets to face the top seed in the section on Friday in Belgrade when the Lakers take on Long Prairie-Grey Eagle-Browerville at 6 p.m. The Thunder (21-1) beat Minnewaska 50-21 when they wrestled on Dec. 19.MINNEWASKA 42, PAYNESVILLE AREA 31106 - Easton McCrory (M) def.
